UNSW Science & Engineering Building
Client: Multiplex / UNSW
Location: Sydney, NSW
Project Value: $5M
Completion: 2018
Sector: University Research Infrastructure
Project Overview
UNSW’s Science & Engineering Building was designed to bring together some of Australia’s most advanced research laboratories under one roof. Delivering eight floors of lab space with highly complex utility requirements demanded a partner capable of handling ultra-high purity systems, hazardous gases, and life safety integration at scale.
Multiplex engaged Umech to provide complete design, installation, and commissioning of laboratory gas infrastructure — ensuring research-ready facilities built to the strictest safety and quality standards.
Umech’s Role
Across the eight-level facility, Umech delivered:
10km of orbitally welded ultra-high purity tube to ensure leak-free, contamination-free performance.
28 specialty gas cabinets and 94 manifold panels for safe, reliable supply of diverse gases.
182 gas sensors integrated into a SIL-rated life safety system for toxic and flammable gas detection.
House gas distribution for nitrogen and compressed air.
Bulk liquid nitrogen plant with vacuum-insulated liquid filling lines.
Specialty gas delivery systems from cylinder sources into individual labs.
Oxygen depletion monitoring and laser safety interlocks to safeguard researchers.
Four dry steam plants and local vacuum systems to support lab operations.
Full site construction management, procurement, supervision, QA, and commissioning.
Technical Highlights
Eight-floor laboratory fit-out with seamless integration into existing UNSW services.
High-purity orbital welding for 99.999% gas purity systems.
