Hydrogen Delivery System – Tallawarra A Power Station

Client: Energy Australia (in partnership with Coregas)
Location: Illawarra, NSW
Project Scope: Hydrogen delivery pipeline and bulk storage distribution facility
Completion: September 2022
Sector: Energy Infrastructure / Power Generation

As part of Energy Australia’s push toward cleaner energy generation, Tallawarra A Power Station required the installation of a dedicated hydrogen fuel delivery system to support turbine cooling operations.

Umech was engaged by Coregas to deliver a design-and-construct solution for bulk hydrogen delivery, including high-spec pipeline installation, hazardous area compliance, and the construction of a custom hydrogen distribution and control facility.

Umech’s Role

Umech provided end-to-end engineering, installation, and commissioning of the hydrogen system:

  • Design and installation of 300+ metres of 1.5" stainless steel hydrogen piping, surface-mounted and routed across the turbine facility

  • Hazardous Area Classification and compliance planning

  • Construction of a bulk storage and distribution shed to house 10x hydrogen manifold packs

  • Custom nitrogen purging system for pipeline and manifold safety

  • Fabrication and installation of a compliant hydrogen vent stack for system depressurization

  • Design and build of concrete slab, structural steelwork, and housing infrastructure

  • Integration of a PLC-controlled delivery and monitoring system

  • Facilitation of HAZOP workshops with engineers from Energy Australia and Coregas to verify design safety and operational performance

Technical Highlights

  • Hazardous Area Compliance: All components rated and installed to ensure safe operation under AS/NZS 60079

  • Nitrogen purge system with integrated bypass for controlled pressurisation

  • Structural and civil works to support large-scale manifold deliveries and storage

  • Ventilation and exhaust design to ensure hydrogen safety during transfer and depressurisation

  • System fully hazoped and verified in collaboration with power station and gas supplier engineering teams

Outcome

Umech successfully delivered a critical hydrogen infrastructure upgrade for one of Australia’s landmark gas-to-hydrogen energy transition projects. The system is now operational and safely supports hydrogen cooling functions at Tallawarra A.

Our role bridged civil, mechanical, electrical, and control engineering — with hydrogen safety at the core of every detail.
